Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday, according to police. He was 43. A handgun was found near his body in a bedroom of his Oceanside, California, home by officers responding to an emergency call from a woman who said she was Seau’s girlfriend, Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy said. She told police she returned to the home about 9:30 am and found Seau “unconscious, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest,” McCoy said. Seau could not be revived by paramedics, McCoy said. “This case, at this point, is being investigated as a suicide,” McCoy said. Seau’s grieving mother cried loudly as she spoke outside the home just two hours after police were called there. “I pray to God, ‘Take me; take me; leave my son,’ but it’s too late,” Luisa Seau said. Seau’s parents are from the island of Aunu’u, American Samoa. “My brother was a loving brother, caring citizen,” his sister, Annette Seau, said as she asked journalists to respect the family’s privacy. “I know you guys will overblow this.” Seau was charged with domestic violence against his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend in October 2010 after police were called to his home. Hours after that arrest, he drove his car off a cliff and landed on the beach in Carlsbad, California. Police later concluded it was an accident caused by lack of sleep. It’s unclear who the gun belongs to. 1:52 PM PDT — The Oceanside PD tells us … Seau’s girlfriend was at the home this morning and saw Seau alive … before she left to the gym at 7:45 AM. We’re told when she returned … she claims she discovered Seau bleeding from his chest and immediately called 911. NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead at his Oceanside, CA home this morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest — law enforcement sources tell TMZ. Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy just spoke outside Seau’s San Diego house, claiming Seau’s body was initially discovered by Seau’s girlfriend. A 911 call was placed around 10AM this morning — authorities responded to the scene, and found Seau’s unconscious body inside a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics attempted to revive Seau, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Hard to believe…… Just yesterday, Seau sent text messages to his wife and three children affirming his love for them. “Love you,” he wrote, according to police reports. In fact, there were no obvious signs of depression, despite rumors from a 2010 accident. In that incident, Seau was involved in a single-car accident when his car went off the side of a cliff. Media outlets reported the ex-San Diego Chargers great as depressed. However, he denied the rumors, ferociously. Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead after a shooting at his Oceanside, California home, today. Suicide is a likely cause of death of the retired New England Patriots football player, according to early police reports. Late Wednesday morning, police were called to Seau’s residence on reports of a shooting. Reportedly, a housekeeper found the body of the NFL great, and called police. However, upon arrival, it was too late; Junior Seau, 43, was dead from what is being reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to TMZ.
